First introduced in 1947, the Graflex Century Graphic is a unique medium format camera housed in the body of a large format camera. Designed to produce images up to 2 1/4" x 3 1/4" (6x9cm), it can use either a 120 roll film back, a cut film holder, or a film pack. This versatile camera offers a variety of aspect ratios with the option for both 6x6 and 6x7 backs.
The Graflex Century Graphic retains all the movements of its larger format sibling, including rise, shift, backwards tilt, and swing. This camera is a true rangefinder, equipped with a side-mounted Kalart finder for models from 1947 to 1955, and a top-mounted finder in models after 1955 for easier flashgun mounting. Originally fitted with Kodak Anastigmat lenses, later models feature Kodak Ektars.
Despite its versatility, the Graflex Century Graphic maintains a compact design that makes it as portable as it is functional. Changing lenses is possible with this camera, albeit changing focal lengths will disable the rangefinder. However, the Century Graphics are equipped with a ground glass back, allowing for view camera style focusing with different focal length lenses.
Shooting with the Century Graphic offers a unique experience, as it's essentially a small large format camera. Despite being seen by some as a stepping stone to large format, many photographers find it to be a destination in itself due to its unique capabilities.
